What Led Me To The Gixo Fitness App?

Years ago I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes. It didn’t come as much of a shock to me, especially since I already had PCOS. At the time, my psychiatrist had just put me on Topamax to treat my bipolar disorder. But it also has the extra benefit of helping people lose weight (although not forever, which I wrote about here). To make a long story short, I lost 50 pounds in 6 months and kept it off for a long time. But the Topamax stopped working and I gained it all back. Which brings me to the present.

Pre-diabetes…Again

When I lost 50 pounds I improved my health a lot. PCOS symptoms and pre-diabetes symptoms improved a lot as well. But unfortunately, they both came back as I gained the weight again. Then on top of that, I recently found myself experiencing some of the classic signs of full-blown diabetes like constant thirst and having to urinate a lot, even at night. So I went to my primary care doctor and got some bloodwork done. I was relieved to learn I’m not diabetic but I am pre-diabetic again (no shocker there). However, I was surprised to learn that I also have hypothyroidism. So I’m also taking Levothyroxine. I’ve only been on it a few weeks so it’s too soon to tell how I’ll do on it.

Turning My Health Around

Clearly, I have to start taking my health seriously. So I’ve decided to eat fewer calories and to cut down on my carb intake. I already feel a 100% better. I’ve decided to work out as well. I’ve always hated working out but if anything could make me enjoy it, it would be adding a social element. In fact, one of the few activities I do enjoy is hiking with my friends. So when I learned about Gixo I thought I’d give it a shot.

The Gixo Fitness App

Gixo is an app that has live workout classes scheduled throughout the day. They’re all led by a trainer and you can sign up for one up until a few minutes before the class starts. I think that’s great because a lot of people are busy and may not know if they’ll have time to fit a workout in at a certain time. You can choose to activate your camera so the trainer can see you but this isn’t a requirement. But if you want feedback on how you’re doing (which can be really useful for activities where your form is important) it’s a good idea. If you do activate the camera the other people in the class can’t see you but you can talk to them by sending them messages.

My First Workout With Gixo

When I did my first workout it was the 15-minute “Super Quickie”. I thought it wouldn’t be too bad for me since I’m pretty out of shape. It was mostly a lot of cardio (running) with some strength training thrown in. It definitely wore me out. I couldn’t do all of the running so I had to slow down and walk for some of it, but the overall attitude at Gixo (among the trainers and the participants) is that it’s better to do something than nothing. So if you are out of shape and you’re afraid someone might give you a hard time for having to stop or go slow, you don’t have to worry about that with Gixo.

All the classes have great music to work out to. If you’re having trouble hearing the trainer’s voice you can change the volume on the trainer’s voice and the music separately which helps a lot. I didn’t figure that out until I was almost finished with my first workout. Haha. Opps.

Your trainer will be able to see your stats (how fast your running, etc.) even if you don’t activate your camera. Here is mine from that day. These stats are sad but I’m proud of them anyway. They are definitely better than “zero”. 🙂

They have tons of different types of classes so there is something for everyone whether you’re looking for cardio, strength training, or a mix of both. And if you don’t want to do a live class they have “on demand” classes too which are recordings of earlier classes that you can do. I haven’t done one of those yet but I’ve watched a few minutes of one though and plan on doing one soon.

Pros And Cons Of Gixo

So Far I really enjoy this app. But as with everything in life, there are good points and bad points. Here are the good things about Gixo.

  • You can work out anywhere. Indoors or outdoors. Whatever works for you.
  • You can do things at your own pace. For instance, there is a run club class but a few people in the Gixo Facebook group mentioned that they just walk during it. And if you need to modify a workout you can talk to your trainer about it and find something that works for you.
  • If you need a social element and encouragement this is the app for you.
  • If you can’t do a live class it also has on-demand classes.
  • The app is user-friendly and easy to navigate.
  • Cheaper than a lot of gym memberships.
  • Available on both Google Play and the Apple Store.

Here are some possible cons or things I’d like to see added.

  • You can add friends and follow people which is great but as far as I can tell you can’t really do anything beyond that. I hope later on they do something to make that function more fun and interesting. Perhaps it would be fun to let people challenge each other to friendly competitions or send each other virtual gifts or trophies? When it comes to online interaction there are a lot of possibilities.
  • I am a forgetful person. It would be nice if they had a built-in alarm to remind me when a class I sign up is about to start. So far I’ve been having to use the alarm on my phone. It isn’t a huge deal but it would be nice if I didn’t have to remember to set a separate alarm each time I sign up for a class. Obviously, this won’t be an issue for everyone. But like I said, I’m very forgetful.
  • It’s not free. This is only a con depending on your personal circumstances. Some people won’t be able to afford it or may not think it’s worth the price of $19.99 a month (or $14.99 a month if billed yearly). But they have a 7-day free trial so you can try it out and see what you think.

Overall Thoughts

I think it’s worth it. Obviously, you aren’t going to get the same intense, one-on-one experience you would get with a personal trainer in a gym, but it’s nice to have a trainer available so you can ask questions if necessary and the extra encouragement definitely helps. There are a lot of different classes so if you get bored with something you can easily switch it up and try something new. The Gixo Facebook community is awesome as well. It’s a great place to ask questions and get encouragement if you need it. We’re all at different levels of fitness but we’re all on the same journey. I also love the fact that you can work out anywhere, anytime. You don’t have to worry about getting to a gym.

I’m glad I came across it. It’s made me look forward to exercising and so far it’s played a big role in helping me get my health back on track. It’s only been about 11 days since I started eating better and exercising but I’ve already lost 7.4 pounds and I feel better than I’ve felt in a long time.
